Launched in September 2009, Instead of Texting is the product of nine years of arguing, commiserating and co-celebrating over sports. The authors are two print journalism refugees and former roommates who attended N.C. State University in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Jimmy Ryals spent 18 years as a Duke devotee before converting to Wolfpackism during his undergrad years at N.C. State. Jimmy had tickets to NCSU’s legendary 1998 pasting of Florida State at Carter-Finley Stadium. He chose not to go to the game and watched the Hillsborough Street celebration from a bench next to the Belltower.
Jeremy Ashton grew up rooting for North Carolina, went to UNC for grad school and married a Carolina girl. Despite having those three strikes against him, he is a devoted Wolfpack fan who spent four years covering N.C. State sports for Technician, the student newspaper. Jeremy also passed up a chance to go to that 1998 game. He made up for it three years later when he watched from the press box at Doak Campbell Stadium as the Pack became the first team to win a conference game in Tallahassee. Jeremy currently lives in South Florida, where Florida football is king.
A note on the name: It’s the brainchild of Jimmy’s girlfriend. She overheard one end of a phone call where Jeremy and Jimmy discussed the idea of co-writing an ACC sports blog. “Great. Maybe you guys can do that instead of texting each other about games all the time.”
